VMware, a major virtualization solution, has announced that it will acquire the "ZIMBRA" business, which is an email and collaboration software acquired by Yahoo! in 2007.
VMware, a major virtualization solution, has announced that it will acquire the "ZIMBRA" business, which is an email and collaboration software acquired by Yahoo! in 2007.この買収により、Zimbraの技術と知的資産を取得する。 Zimbraは、Ajaxベースでオープンソースのメール、アドレス帳、予定表機能などを手がけており、世界15万社、5,500万メールボックス相当のユーザーを有している。顧客には米Comcast、スタンフォード大学、Mozillaなどが含まれ、日本でも東京薬科大学などが採用していた。 米Yahoo!では2009年に同社サービスにより、有料メールボックスが対前年比86％増加することなどに貢献しており、VMwareによる買収後もYahoo!メールなどに用いられているZimbraの技術はそのままYahoo!が使用する権利を有する。 VMwareでは、SaaSを提供するZimbra買収により、企業向けクラウドサービスの強化をうたっており、今後もZimbraのコミュニティなどの取り組みをサポートしていく考え。仮想化プラットフォーム「米VMware vSphere」に最適化していくとともに、2009年に立ち上げたサードパーティー向け「VMware vCloud」上にZimbraを加えることで、SaaS事業に参入することになる。なお、VMwareでは2008年にJava関連のオープンソースWebdevelopmentアプリケーションなどを手がける米SpringSourceを買収しており、クラウドサービスの拡充を進めている。To List
