You can draw up to this point with just your smartphone! Wacom One x CLIP STUDIO for Galaxy allows you to create illustrations without a computer

Celsys' "CLIP STUDIO PAINT" series, commonly known as Crysta, is a world-famous illustration, manga, and animation production tool. It is also known to be used by many professional manga artists and illustrators because it is easy to use and highly functional. "CLIP STUDIO PAINT for Galaxy" appears in the same series this year. As the name suggests, Crysta can now be used on the Galaxy series of Android devices!

Moreover, the latest smartphone "Galaxy S20" series and other Galaxy terminals that support DeX mode can also be linked with that Wacom LCD pen tablet "Wacom One LCD pen tablet 13". How comfortable can you draw an illustration on an Android device? How comfortable is it when you connect Wacom One?

I actually decided to use CLIP STUDIO PAINT for Galaxy, which is a "Galaxy version of Crysta", using Galaxy and Wacom One.

Try to draw with your finger + smartphone

After the announcement of the Galaxy version of Crysta, the first thing I felt was "Is it really possible to draw an illustration with the screen size of a smartphone?" So, at first, I decided to use it on the Galaxy S20 (S20). When I actually use it, I can't draw a line at the desired position with just one shot because I draw with my finger. You can see the result.

By the way, this time I used S20, so I drew it with my finger, but the Galaxy Note series comes with an S pen equipped with a pressure sensing function, so it should have been a little easier to draw. However, the small screen size is hard to come by. The Galaxy version of Crysta has various ideas for drawing illustrations on a small screen, such as automatically hiding the palette when drawing, but I still feel that "if there is a little more work space".

The app itself is so sophisticated that you can't think it's for Android, and even if you create 10 or more layers, it works surprisingly quickly, so it's an impression that you can use it quite a bit if you solve the problem of workspace.

That's why the 13-inch LCD pen tablet "Wacom One" is introduced. Simply prepare an HDMI-compatible USB-C adapter, connect it to the S20 and Wacom One, and the S20 screen will be easily displayed on the LCD pen tablet.

Galaxy such as S20 is equipped with a function called "DeX" that allows you to operate your smartphone as if you were using a personal computer. With this function, you can realize the screen display and operation feeling like a personal computer just by connecting the S20 to Wacom One.

S20 + Wacom One = Comfortable to use like a PC!

Now, from here, let's actually use the Galaxy version of Crysta on Wacom One. What you immediately notice when using Wacom One is that the work space is expanded to improve production efficiency! When working on a smartphone, all palettes such as layers and brushes are hidden when drawing. It will be. But with a 13-inch area like the Wacom One, you can work comfortably with multiple pallets displayed.

When I'm drawing an illustration, I have to change the color, brush type, thickness, and layer, but I'm really grateful that I don't have to "display the palette" each time.

When using Wacom One, the impression is that the operation feeling is almost the same as that of Crysta for personal computers. There are a wide variety of brushes such as transparent watercolors, gouache, and oil paintings, and there are also many materials that are useful for manga production, such as backgrounds and tones.

Personally, I was surprised that the 3D drawing model was firmly included as a material, despite the smartphone app. This is a 3D model of men and women who can freely adjust their posture and camera viewpoint. Even if you are not good at drawing human bodies, you can create a well-balanced human body illustration by putting this model on the draft layer.

Easy to draw! Easy to use! Wacom's unique ingenuity is here and there

When you actually use Wacom One, you can see that there are various advantages other than screen size. First of all, a foldable stand is stored in the main body, and when you open the stand, you can make an angle of 19 degrees. The work of drawing illustrations tends to take a long time, so it is a nice point to be able to work in a natural posture at an angle that is easy to work with.

By the way, inside the stand, there is a space for 3 replacement cores and a core remover. As you can see by using an LCD pen tablet, the core will inevitably be scraped during heavy use, so I always want to have a replacement core. If you can store the replacement core in the main body, you can prevent the mistake of "I should have bought the replacement core but I can't find it!" (I often do it). I feel that such detailed ease of use is truly Wacom, which has made pen tablets for many years.

What's more attractive is that you can use various pens in addition to the genuine pen that comes with it. You can also use a digital pen from a famous stationery maker.

This time, I tried using "Hi-uni DIGITAL for Wacom" that Wacom collaborated with Mitsubishi Pencil, and it really has the same grip as that nostalgic "Hi-Uni"! The shape of the wooden hexagonal column is strange. It fits your finger perfectly. Also, when I smell it, I personally feel the scent of wood, which is peculiar to pencils.

Isn't this good for work other than illustrations?

Until now, the author has felt that a personal computer with specifications above a certain level is necessary for drawing digital illustrations. Of course, it is necessary to handle heavy data that requires print resolution such as poster size, and for professionals who want to control the pen pressure of lines at the craftsman level, we recommend the conventional "high spec PC + high spec LCD pen tablet". .. However, if you want to enjoy illustrations as a hobby, S20 + Wacom One should be more than enough.

Recently, it is said that "young people who master smartphones are away from PCs", but if you want to try digital illustrations but are hesitant to buy a PC, start by creating illustrations with Wacom One and smartphones. You may want to give it a try. If you feel that your smartphone isn't enough, you have the option of connecting your Wacom One to your computer, so it's not a waste.

By the way, I also tried Microsoft Office (Android version) on S20 + Wacom One in addition to Galaxy version Crysta, but I would like to mention that it was also quite comfortable. Just by connecting it to Wacom One, I realized that the potential of smartphones has increased dramatically.

What I felt with Wacom One is that the smartphone I use all the time is as powerful as a laptop computer. To be honest, I didn't think that I would be able to draw pictures so hard on my smartphone. However, there are some restrictions on the smartphones that can be connected, so if you are interested, please check the compatible products from the list of confirmed models.
